Sausalito, a charming waterfront town of 7500 residents, is located just
north of the Golden Gate Bridge, on the south-eastern tip of Marin County. Named by 18th century Spanish
explorers for the "little willow" trees (Saucelito) growing on the banks of
its streams, Sausalito is famous for its open air cafes, art galleries, and
unusual boutiques. Many visitors from San Francisco find it convenient to
visit by ferry from Fisherman's Wharf or by automobile over the Golden Gate
Bridge. The waterfront promenade, open plazas and festive atmosphere are often compared to the French Rivera.
Important attractions include the famous houseboat community, the Bay Area
Discovery Museum and the Bay Model Visitor Center, a one and a half acre working scale model of the bay.
