Novato, the northernmost city in
Marin County, was incorporated in 1960. Located about 29 miles north of San
Francisco, it has approximately 48,000 residents. Some of the major
employers in the city include Firemen's Fund, Birkenstock, TravelSmith,
Broderbund and Smith and Hawken. There is also a large tech industry in the
city.
Downtown Novato has many charming shops and restaurants, but the town has a
rural feel largely because of its low population density and the high amount
of open space and parks in and near the city: major recreation areas include
Mt. Burdell in northern Novato, Olompali State Park, and three major city
parks. Major community events include the Novato Festival of Art, Wine and
Music each June, Concerts in the Park throughout the summer, the annual 4th
of July Parade in downtown Novato and the City's Labor Day Picnic at
Stafford Lake.
